Over the past several years, I've noticed an emerging trend in beach wedding photography. After the bride and groom have said "I do", danced, drank, eaten and driven off into the sunset (or simply walked upstairs to their room); they're left with a large white dress. This dress for all intents and purposes sits in the closet for years on end. However, it doesn't have to! There is at least one other thing they can do with it! That is, Trash the Dress portraits! Simply put, brides and grooms throw caution to the wind, put on all their wedding duds, and splash around in the sand and salt water for some unforgettable photos AND memories. If you're willing to get a little wet and sandy (and obviously you are, considering you chose the beach), the results of these photo shoots are unique and priceless.
Some couples even like to include friends and family members or the bridal party in the fun. As I've always said, kids are photographic gold, and wow do they love to roll around in the waves! Or if you're more interested in romantic portraits, you can do a photo shoot for 2.
So, on to the major question of this post! Why TRASH THE DRESS?!?! The main answer to that question is, because you can. This second use of the iconic wedding dress gives it new life. The photos that come from it are quintessential beach photography. They're sexy, fun, and more often than not, spontaneous. What do I mean by that last one? Well, you're in the ocean. You never know when the next wave is going to hit, what will you look like as you rise from the majestic ocean covered in lace, salt, and sand? Did you know he'd look that amazing with his white shirt plastered to his abs? It's that same white shirt he wore just hours ago to say "I do" to you. Now he's rolling around in the surf with you. Your husband, Your Wife. That means something, something big. Just look...
Over the next few weeks, I hope to share some other reasons why you should consider a Trash the Dress session. I'll be answering questions like:
- Doesn't rolling around in the waves at a "Trash the Dress Shoot" ruin the dress?
- When should I do a Trash the Dress photo shoot?
- Who should I invite to my Trash the Dress session?
